The Greenwich Library is home to hundreds of books and offers a variety of programs for its patrons. During the tough economic times, the library has seen its flow of people and books increase dramatically.
But, like many libraries across the nation, cut backs are inevitable. The library is turning to its patrons for donations to avoid program cuts.
The library is supported by the public and private partnership between the town and individual donors.
"The town of Greenwich provides about 73 percent of the annual budget, coverall most of the operating expenses of the library, " said Carol Mahoney, director of the Greenwich Library. "All programs and many of our broad-based collections and services are made possible by our generous donors."
Welcoming nearly 700,000 visitors and circulating over $1.4 million materials, Greenwich Library is one of the biggest in the state.
"Without private contributions, essential programs are in jeopardy," said Mahoney. "We need private support now, more than ever. In these difficult financial times, every program is examined to determine its cost and benefit to the community."
