GREENWICH, Conn. Greenwich residents had mostly dodged the threat of power outages as of Friday evening despite increased energy use due to the heat. Connecticut Light & Power reported that less than 1 percent of Greenwich customers were without power.
The opposite was the case last month when heat, thunderstorms and a series of unfortunate electrical events combined to knock out power to more than 4,500 residents. CL&P afterward vowed to improve service reliability, including upgrading infrastructure.
Dan Warzoha, the towns emergency management director, said on Wednesday he was more concerned about power outages later Friday and into Saturday. A heat wave of this proportion hasnt happened in over a year, he said. How underground and aerial cables will handle the heat is another matter, and its something were going to be looking into.
The following locations are serving as cooling centers during routine business hours through Sunday, July 24, when the heat is expected to break:
? Greenwich Main Library, 101 W. Putnam Ave., Friday to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.
? Cos Cob Branch Library, 5 Sinawoy Road (behind the Cos Cob Firehouse), Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Sunday.
