The flag outside Greenwich High School flew at half-mast Tuesday in memory of Jocelyne Gilles Day, a 16-year-old sophomore who died over the weekend. Day's death was determined to be a suicide, according to Lt. Kraig Gray, Greenwich Police Dept. spokesman.
"There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow that is felt for the tragic loss of this young life," Schools Superintendent Sidney A. Freund said in a released statement. "Our hearts go out to the student's family, friends and teachers and we offer our condolences and our support."
Day was born in Haiti in 1994 and was adopted by the Day family in 2005. She helped raise thousands of dollars to support the Greenwich teen chapter of Save the Children's Haiti Earthquake Fund. Day was also an award-winning member of the GHS track team.
Freund said the high school brought in the school crisis team to address the needs of the teen's family and friends and school staff members. Counselors and school psychologists were made available for grief counseling for students and staff. Freund encouraged students to take advantage of the counseling.
Calling hours will be Wednesday at The First Church of Round Hill from 4 to 8 p.m. A service is scheduled Thursday at the Round Hill Community Church at 4 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to Save the Children of Westport Connecticut in Day's name.
