GREENWICH, Conn. Many of Greenwich's firefighters grew up in town and, as kids, came to the Boys & Girls Club, where many learned to swim. This week, 90 firefighters received water rescue training there.
Firefighters learned life-saving techniques and used new life-preserving equipment during two-hour training sessions from Feb. 20 to Feb. 24. Using the pool kept the trainees away from the unpredictable conditions outdoors, where they usually train.
When training was completed on Friday, Bob DeAngelo, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club, made breakfast for the crew as a way to say "thanks" for all that they do for the community.
A temporary central Greenwich fire station is being built across the street from the club. DeAngelo said it was a great opportunity for the club's new neighbors to work jointly. In the future, Boys & Girls Club members will get the chance to see training up-close, and may be inspired to become rescue workers themselves someday, DeAngelo said.
