During the holiday season "DUI is a major concern for the Greenwich community," said Sgt. John Slusarz, of the traffic section of the Greenwich Police Department. With the deployment of extra officers on the weekends for the Thanksgiving to New Year's season, 20 arrests were made on charges of driving under the influence and no fatal car accidents occurred.
According to published statistics for 2008, 40 percent of fatal collisions in the state were alcohol-related. During the holidays, Greenwich police increased the number of officers assigned to high visibility motor vehicle enforcement activities with the goal of detecting and deterring those who may drive drunk.
In the latest period of extra enforcement, from Dec. 23 to midnight Jan. 2, the Greenwich Police Department made 113 motor vehicle stops, arrested six people on DUI charges, and investigated 40 car accidents.
For the total holiday season, the department issued 844 citations, made 20 DUI arrests, and issued 432 warnings, mostly for equipment violations such as a burned out headlight or taillights, according to Slusarz.
