Greenwich Candidates Surprised by Low Turnout

GREENWICH, Conn. – Just 22 percent, or 7,578 of 33,893 registered Greenwich voters, had cast their ballots as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, the registrar of voters reported.

Democratic and Republican candidates expressed concern over the low-turnout rate outside polling locations in Greenwich.

Democratic first selectman candidate John Blankley was standing outside Glenville School, the District 10 polling location, to cast his ballot. “I’m surprised at voter turnout, because I was quoted yesterday saying I was expecting a higher than normal turnout.

"‘A,’ It’s a beautiful day and ‘B’ I thought the controversy on the school board would bring people out. I’ve been confounded on that one so far.”

“I’m feeling good, but I would have expected a higher turnout by now,” said Drew Marzullo, Blankley’s running mate and incumbent selectman. “With the board of ed being so controversial and the weather being so beautiful you would expect more people to be out.”

First Selectman Incumbent Peter Tesei was across town, outside the District 1 polling location at Julian Curtiss School.

“It all depends on the cycle when people go out,” Tesei said. He was spending the day visiting each polling location with his fellow incumbent Republicans, Selectman David Theis, Tax Collector Tod Laudonia, and Town Clerk Carmella Budkins.

“We’d certainly love for it to be higher because so much of what happens locally has a direct impact on citizens,” Tesei said, adding voters he spoke to have seemed upbeat and positive at the polls.
