GREENWICH, Conn. Just 22 percent, or 7,578 of 33,893 registered Greenwich voters, had cast their ballots as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, the registrar of voters reported.
Democratic and Republican candidates expressed concern over the low-turnout rate outside polling locations in Greenwich.
Democratic first selectman candidate John Blankley was standing outside Glenville School, the District 10 polling location, to cast his ballot. Im surprised at voter turnout, because I was quoted yesterday saying I was expecting a higher than normal turnout.
"A, Its a beautiful day and B I thought the controversy on the school board would bring people out. Ive been confounded on that one so far.
Im feeling good, but I would have expected a higher turnout by now, said Drew Marzullo, Blankleys running mate and incumbent selectman. With the board of ed being so controversial and the weather being so beautiful you would expect more people to be out.
First Selectman Incumbent Peter Tesei was across town, outside the District 1 polling location at Julian Curtiss School.
It all depends on the cycle when people go out, Tesei said. He was spending the day visiting each polling location with his fellow incumbent Republicans, Selectman David Theis, Tax Collector Tod Laudonia, and Town Clerk Carmella Budkins.
Wed certainly love for it to be higher because so much of what happens locally has a direct impact on citizens, Tesei said, adding voters he spoke to have seemed upbeat and positive at the polls.
Here is the breakdown of polling districts in Greenwich:
District 1 (South Center): 592 of 2,634 registered voters or about 22 percent
District 2 (Harbor): 464 of 2,128 registered voters or about 22 percent
District 3 (Chickahominy): 229 of 1,389 registered voters or about 16 percent
District 4 (Byram): 479 of 2,415 registered voters or about 20 percent
District 5 (Riverside): 816 of 2,767 registered voters or about 29 percent
District 6 (Old Greenwich): 808 of 2,873 registered voters or about 28 percent
District 7 (North Center): 572 of 2,942 registered voters or about 19 percent
District 8 (Cos Cob): 672 of 3,859 registered voters or about 19 percent
District 9 (Pemberwick-Glenville): 632 of 2,945 registered voters or about 21 percent
District 10 (Northwest): 562 of 3,143 registered voters or about 18 percent
District 11 (Northeast): 686 of 3,597 registered voters or about 25 percent
District 12 (Havemeyer): 796 of 3,201 registered voters or about 22 percent
In the 2009 municipal election, a total of 37.2 percent, or 13,395 of 36,982, registered voters cast ballots.
