Greenwich Building Preservation Nominees Wanted

GREENWICH, Conn. – The Greenwich Historical Society needs nominations for its 2012 Preservation Awards to honor individuals, organizations and projects for their contributions to preserving Greenwich’s historical resources.

"In a town with a remarkable heritage of buildings and landscapes, there are undoubtedly many other fine preservation accomplishments. The Historical Society would very much like to recognize these efforts," John Dixon, chairman for the project, said in a prepared statement.

The society held its first Preservation Awards program two years ago. Among the exemplary projects honored at that time were the restoration of the Innis Arden Cottage at Greenwich Point and the establishment of the Stanwich Historic District.

The project or activity must be of historical or architectural significance and demonstrate the aesthetic, cultural or economic benefits of preservation. Nominations are due at the Greenwich Historical Society by June 4.

The jury will include Greenwich residents chosen for their knowledge of the town's architecture and preservation, along with experts in those fields from a wider region.

Categories for projects and activities that would qualify include:

• Historic Restoration/Rehabilitation Projects: Structures or sites where major original features — exterior, interior or both — have been preserved or replicated for substantially the original use. Projects must have been completed after Jan. 1, 2002.

• Adaptive Reuse Projects: Structures or sites that, while requiring significant changes for a new use, are nonetheless saved and given renewed life. Projects must have been completed after Jan. 1, 2002.

• Stewardship: Effective maintenance and care of structures or landscapes of historic or architectural significance.

• Preservation Action: Recognizing individuals or organizations that advance the cause of historic preservation. Examples of their activities might be preservation campaigns, political action, education and research. A significant part of the activity must have taken place since Jan. 1, 2002.

• Special Achievement: Recognizing major accomplishments or lifetime work dedicated to the advancement of historic preservation.

Award recipients will be notified by Aug. 3. An awards event will take place on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. at The Field Club as part of the Greenwich Historical Society's annual meeting.
