GREENWICH, Conn. The Greenwich Library is one for the books, according to the Library Journal, which has named it a five-star library for the third time and ranked it ninth in the nation among public libraries with budgets of $5 million to $10 million.
The simplest way to explain the local and regional success of Greenwich Library is to point to the indefatigable dedication of the staff, the trustees and an army of Friends volunteers to fulfill the mission and vision of the Library, said Carol Mahoney, the librarys director. All involved are committed to the highest levels of internal and patron service.
The rating is based on 2009 data reported by local libraries to their state library agencies and compiled by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The data is measured by the Library Journal index of public library service output.
The index is determined equally by four indicators: visits, circulation, program attendance and public Internet computer use. The top libraries in each category, organized by ranges of operating expenditures, were then assigned five, four or three stars. This year, 7,513 libraries were evaluated and 262 received star ratings.
In its 132nd year of publication, Library Journal is the oldest publication covering the library field. More than 100,000 library directors, administrators and staff in public, academic and special libraries read it.
Three other Connecticut libraries received star ratings in other categories: Norfolk Library (five stars in the $200,000 to $399,900 budget category), Darien Library (four stars in the $1 million to $5 million budget category) and David M. Hunt Library in Falls Village (three stars in the $100,000 to $199,900 category).
