GREENWICH, Conn. The Glenville Volunteer Fire Company in Greenwich was selected to receive a piece of Artifact Steel from the World Trade Center in New York City and is constructing a 9/11 Memorial with this artifact as its centerpiece.
The volunteer fire company was selected by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to receive the 8-foot-by-4-inch piece late last week. On Sept. 11, 2001, Glenville volunteer firefighters were deployed into Westchester County as part of the mutual aid response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center that day. Other members also assisted in recovery efforts at Ground Zero in the weeks afterward.
The company plans to construct the memorial and display it at the firehouse. Private donations are funding the work. The dedication and unveiling ceremony for the memorial is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
The Port Authority is distributing 1,1000 pieces of Artifact Steel to recipients throughout the world.
