Original story: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Rush-hour traffic on Friday afternoon in Fairfield County went from bad to worse.

An accident blocked two lanes on northbound Interstate 95 in Greenwich just at the start of rush hour traffic on Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. between exits 3 and 4. The accident stopped traffic, and delays were expected for up to one hour.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation said the accident involved a tractor-trailer and another vehicle. The right and center lanes were closed for a while.

Later Friday afternoon, the Connecticut DOT website also said northbound traffic was delayed for more than 23 miles between Exit 3 in Greenwich and Exit 23 in Fairfield on I-95.

The early accident in Greenwich helped create near gridlock as gawkers held up southbound traffic. Another accident at 4:13 p.m. between Exits 7 and 8 in Stamford added to the mess. The I-95 delays forced many motorists to the Merritt Parkway, tying up northbound traffic on that road as well.

Danbury drivers had their own headaches. A tractor-trailer accident near Exit 10 on eastbound Interstate 84 was tying up traffic through the entire city, leaving drivers on both ends of the county frustrated with their weekend drive.
