Free College Prep Courses In Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. -- When Port Chester High School student Christian Mora heard about a new program that offered free SAT preparation and college admission counseling, he knew he couldn't pass it up.

"Almost everyone who is successful has a college education," said Mora, 17. "It's just common sense."

The organization Let's Get Ready, which provides college preparation services to low-income students throughout parts of the northeastern United States, recently started a new site at the Boys & Girls Club in Greenwich, Conn. that serves students in both Greenwich and Port Chester.

The program, which began June 23 and runs through August 11, offers courses twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Students are provided with SAT prep books and alternate between verbal and math exercises. Study groups of five or so students are led by volunteers made up of college students.

"They're able to get a lot more out of studying because the groups are so small," said volunteer Erica Adler, who studies psychology at Vanderbilt University.

Students are also advised on the college application process and offered tours of several college campuses in the area, including a college fair at Columbia University.

"The college trips are really important," said site director Justin Lipton. "They get to see what it feels like to be on a real college campus."

Mora said he has his heart set on a college in California and is considering going into journalism. He said his SAT scores are above average, but that he would still like to raise them by another 300 points.

Finances are an issue and his college choices will be limited to the scholarships he is offered, so he wants his application to be as strong as possible.

"I don't want to go into debt," he said.
