A grant of $250,000 will fund the installation of dry hydrants and prebuilt cisterns for water storage in backcountry Greenwich to improve fire protections in areas where municipal water lines are scarce, state Rep. Livvy Floren announced this week.
"This is an essential part of the fire safety program in Greenwich," Gov. M. Jodi Rell said in a statement of the grant, which is part of the state's Small Town Economic Assistance Program. Greenwich received a $200,000 grant from the same program last year.
A new cistern is being installed underground on the shoulder of the road along King Street. The closed-in area will soon have a 30,000-gallon tank that is 65 feet long and 40 feet wide. Cistern installation costs about $140,000.
The Fire Department has been adding natural and artificial water sources for about eight years in the backcountry. Dry hydrants, which cost $25,000 each, are attached to underground pipelines connected to the water sources. Nearly 25 hydrants have been placed in the backcountry.
STEAP was created in 2001 by the General Assembly to help fund economic development and create a better quality of life in suburbs.
"I want to thank Gov. M. Jodi Rell for her leadership in making this project a state priority," said Floren, R-Greenwich and Stamford. "Our town still has needs essential to the life safety of Greenwich residents."
