Fire Lane Approved For Y

The Board of Selectmen have designated the roadway in front of the Greenwich YMCA an official "fire lane" to deal with the potential problem of parked cars hampering access by emergency vehicles.

Deputy Fire Chief Joe Benoit said Thursday that motorists are parking on the roadway that runs past the pool building and into the parking garage. The Y has tried to deal with the issue by placing markers and signs but has not been successful.

"It hampers our ability to get access not only to the parking garage but also into the building," said Benoit. "With the approval of an official fire lane, since it is private property, Parking Enforcement can police the property and ticket the cars."

The Y will take care of signage and posting. The fire lane designation goes into effect immediately.
