A lifelong Greenwich resident, Sophie Berlingo, a devoted mother and grandmother, died Aug. 9 at Greenwich Hospital surrounded by family and loved ones. The 89-year-old was born Oct. 15, 1920, the youngest child of the late Charles and Catherine Smith.
An avid gardener and cook, she also worked for CBS Publications in Greenwich until the age of 65, then went on to be a bus monitor looking after special needs children for Greenwich. Berlingo retired at the age of 85.
Berlingo is survived by her son William and his wife Sandra; her daughter Adele Hatch and her husband Stephen along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A burial took place Monday, Aug. 16, at St. Mary Cemetery on North Street. In lieu of flowers, her family requested donations in Sophie's name to Greenwich Adult Day Care, 125 River Road Ext., Cos Cob, CT 06807, where she went almost every day.
