Fairfield County Congressmen Battle on Twitter

GREENWICH, Conn. – U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-4th District, is battling it out with U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, D-5th District, on Twitter to see who can get the most new followers this week.

At noon Monday, @ChrisMurphyCT (Murphy) and @jahimes (Himes) launched a five-day contest to see who can garner the most followers on Twitter, just for fun.

In just 24 hours, Himes landed more than 5,200 followers to just more than 3,000 for Murphy. In his plea for residents to “follow him,” Greenwich resident Himes said Twitter is one of the “most important mechanisms” he uses to get breaking news.

“I receive and occasionally respond to comments with other tweeters and can see a snapshot of opinions on a specific topic in an instant simply by searching one hash tag,” said Himes.

Here are some of the highlights of Himes’ tweets since then:

• jahimes: "War" is wrong word. Think US 1983 invasion of Grenada. @ctnewsjunkie: Twitter war @ChrisMurphyCT: @jahimes

• jahimes: Getting Better / MT @fakedansavage An "ItGetsBetter" video created by soldiers in Afghanistan—unimaginable 2 years ago:

• jahimes: Glad we have @ppact @ProChoiceCt @naral fighting for woman's right to choose. #roevwade anniv reminds us to stay vigilant #tweet4choice

• jahimes: As a legislator, I welcome the first ever freely elected parliament in #egypt. Chaotic and partisan, but they'll grow out of that. Right?

• jahimes: Rep. Keith Ellison has an Elmo doll on the Floor this morning. Haven't seen that before.
