Evelyn A. Russell, Greenwich School Secretary

Evelyn A. Russell a former secretary in the Greenwich school system, died Sunday. She was 81 years old and lived in Wakefield, R.I.

Russell was born in Medford, Mass. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Anna and Jim Cassani, and cousins Janice, Robert and James. She graduated from Medford High School in 1946 and from Hickox Secretarial School in Boston, where she later taught shorthand. She married James Russell in 1952.

Russell worked as a secretary at Central Middle School (then Central Junior High School). She was a Brownie leader and a library volunteer. She was an accomplished seamstress, cook, gardener, decorator and homemaker. She played the piano, enjoyed music, theatre, literature and the seashore. In her retirement, she enjoyed travel, especially to Italy.

In addition to her husband, survivors are two daughters, Melinda Russell of Northfield, Minn., and Beth Berry and her husband, Jeff, of Dallas, and four grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated Thursday, May 5, at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Road in Kingston, R.I. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to South County Hospital, 100 Kenyon Ave., Wakefield, RI 02879.
