Eugene Moye, First African-American GPD Officer

Greenwich resident Eugene James Moye Sr., the first African-American police officer in town, died at Greenwich Hospital on March 14. He was 89.

Moye was born in New York. He served as a sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific. After returning home, Moye joined the Greenwich police force as its first African-American officer. In 1967, he received the Clark Award for his work with the first Youth Division of the Greenwich Police Department.

After retirement, Moye became a social studies teacher at Western Junior High School and earned a master’s in history from Bridgeport University. He was an active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanette Belanger; four children, Neria, Susan, Dee Moye Hoban and Eugene Moye; and five grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 17, at 11:30 a.m. at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be private. Memorial donations can be made to the Friends of the Cos Cob Library.
