Elderly Driver Hurt in Crash Expected to Recover

GREENWICH, Conn. – The 84-year-old woman whose car collided with a 10-wheel dump truck Monday remained in critical condition Tuesday with severe injuries.

The woman was driving south on North Street on Monday when she began drifting into the northbound lane, police said during preliminary investigations. The dump truck driver took evasive action when he saw the woman’s Lexus drift into his lane. He slowed his vehicle and shifted the truck to the right. At the time of the collision, the truck was at a near standstill.

Family members have requested that the woman’s name not be released, but police say she was transported Monday night from Greenwich Hospital to Valhalla Medical Center in Westchester County, N.Y. As of Tuesday morning, the woman’s medical status was “encouraging,” but she will have “a long recovery ahead of her,” according to Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the Greenwich Police Department.

“The operator was wearing her seatbelt, and the police department feels strongly that was a contributing factor to her surviving this serious crash,” said Gray.

The accident remained under investigation, and no enforcement action has been taken.
