Vyacheslav Cherepov, 28, dragged Meghan Beebe underneath his car for about 900 feet after backing over her in a Williams Street parking lot about 2:10 a.m. Dec. 28, 2013. Cherepov, who worked as a waiter at a nearby Greenwich restaurant, fled the scene.
The 21-year-old from Middlebury who had recently completed studies at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, was alive when paramedics reached her but died hours later at Stamford Hospital.
A female companion of Beebe’s tried unsuccessfully to stop Cherepov as he drove with Beebe pinned beneath the car, Greenwich police said. Beebe was found lying on the street by an unidentified resident, police said.
Cherepov, a Russian native, was arrested two days after the hit-and-run when he returned to the scene. Blood found on Cherepov's red 2006 Pontiac G6 sedan was later linked to Beebe through DNA testing, authorities said.
Cherepov, who had faced a manslaughter charge, pleaded guilty to one count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, according to the Advocate. Under the plea deal, he will get a 10-year prison sentence, suspended after five years, the Advocate said.
