Driver Falls Asleep, Hits Car in Greenwich

A Stamford man was arrested in Greenwich on Sunday after falling asleep at the wheel and hitting another car while at a green light at Mill Street and North Water Street, police said.

Responding officers found Ramon Alfre Martinez-Espinoza, 38, of 134 Lockwood Ave., asleep at the wheel of his car. When police couldn't wake him, they opened the car door and smelled alcohol from within the vehicle. Martinez-Espinoza admitted to drinking before the car accident, police said.

He failed field sobriety tests and was unable to provide a valid driver's license. Martinez-Espinoza was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, operating a motor vehicle with no driver's license and following too closely. He was held on $250 bond and is due in court Dec. 27.

• Vincent Tummarello, 23, of 19 Armstrong Ct. in Greenwich was arrested on DWI charges Saturday after being stopped for making an improper turn off Interstate 95 and traveling the wrong way on eastbound travel lanes of East Putnam Ave. During the stop Tummarello had slurred speech, glassy red eyes and smelled of alcohol, according to police. He failed field sobriety tests, and officers found his driver's license was under suspension from a previous DWI conviction. He was arrested on charges of DWI, operating under suspension, improper turn and driving the wrong way. He was held on $500 bond and is due in court Dec. 27.
