Downed Trees, Outages Spread in Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. – A downed tree across West Putnam Avenue in Greenwich leading into Port Chester, N.Y., was causing motorists to backtrack and find alternate routes Saturday night as a slushy unprecedented Nor’easter moved through the area.

About 4,460 Connecticut Light & Power customers in Greenwich, or about 15 percent, were without power as of Saturday evening.

The Greenwich High School football team’s homecoming game against Westhill was postponed until 2 p.m. Monday due to the storm.

A winter storm warning and coastal flood advisory is in effect, with the National Weather Service calling for as much as 8 to 12 inches of snow through 3 a.m. Sunday in the area.

The town’s Department of Public Works highway and tree crews, along with CL&P, were working Saturday night into early Sunday to clear roads of snow and fallen trees. The town’s emergency management services sent out automated townwide messages using the reverse-911 system, advising residents to exercise caution when heading out on the roads.

Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line was operating with delays up to 30 minutes Saturday night in both directions because of signal problems, according to the Metropolitan Transit Authority.
