Residents and travelers on the River Road bridge will face lane closures and detours when repairs begin later this month. The plan to repair the bridge was approved Thursday by the Greenwich Board of Selectmen.
Frank Petis, senior civil engineer for the town Department of Public Works, said, "The masonry wing walls have severe water loss ... and there's a chain link fence that does not meet federal and state standards for crash protection, and we need to update that as well."
The project will involve repairing the cement rubble masonry wing walls, installing metal bridge and guiderail to replace the chain link fence, replacing the sidewalk and adding a catch basin.
Vitti Excavators of Stamford will begin Phase I of the project Sept. 20 during which all lanes will remain open. During Phase II, however, the eastbound lane over the bridge will be closed. The detour will take drivers from Strickland Road to East Putnam Avenue to Mead Avenue and back to River Road. Phase II is expected to begin the week of Oct. 4 or Oct. 11. Lanes will reopen the week of Oct. 25, weather permitting.
