Construction Will Halt for the Holidays

The town will stop roadwork during the holiday season in an effort to ease parking and traffic nightmares at this busy time.

Effective Nov. 22 through Jan. 1, no roadway openings, excavations, blocking or restricting of public sidewalks or parking spaces will be permitted in the central business districts of Greenwich, Old Greenwich, Riverside, Cos Cob, Byram or Glenville except in emergencies, said Joseph Roberto, highway superintendent for the town. The ruling has been adopted to minimize traffic disruptions.

"We prohibit roadwork and other construction unless in an emergency or dire need, and we don't issue any excavation permits, either," said Roberto. "It's been pretty well-received over the years, and contractors are compliant."

In addition to reducing traffic during the holiday season, the town announced in August a preholiday bonus for shoppers: free parking Dec. 4 during the Greenwich Reindeer Festival. The festival, organized by Greenwich's TMK Sports Entertainment, will feature Santa and his reindeer at McArdle's Florist and Garden Center on Arch Street. All proceeds from the event will benefit Kids in Crisis. Greenwich Chamber of Commerce President Mary Ann Morrison said in published reports, free parking on a Saturday is "always an enticement to the merchants."
