CL&P Trims Trees in Greenwich To Avert Outages

GREENWICH, Conn. – A $600,000 tree-trimming project has begun in Greenwich as part of Connecticut Light & Power's efforts "to reduce the vulnerability of [its] distribution system to outages,” the utility announced Monday.

The work will involve about 25 percent of CL&P’s power lines in Greenwich and will be completed by the end of the year. Trimming will take place primarily south of Route 1, and in the Lake Avenue area of town between Round Hill Road and the Merritt Parkway as well as the Valley Road, Cat Rock Road and Cognewaug Road neighborhoods.

According to CL&P, trees are the No. 1 cause of power outages, and regularly scheduled trimming is needed to reduce service interruptions.

“Emergency preparedness is a top priority at CL&P, and significantly increasing our tree-trimming program is one way we’re demonstrating that commitment to our customers," Bill Quinlan, CL&P’s vice president of emergency preparedness, said in a statement earlier this month. "We’ll be working closely with our municipal partners to coordinate our efforts.”

Enhanced tree trimming will also be done in areas where tree-related outages have occurred in the past. Crews from Lewis Tree Service Inc. are working under the guidance of Doug Pistawka, CL&P's senior vegetation management program coordinator.
