Carmela D'Andrea, Lifelong Riverside Resident

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Carmela (Nellie) D’Andrea died Sunday at her Riverside home after a short illness. She was 87 years old.

D’Andrea was born in Cos Cob. She was a diligent student and was named by classmates in her high school yearbook as having a “pleasant disposition.” She graduated from Greenwich High School in 1942 and began working for Electrolux of Old Greenwich.

She married William D’Andrea Sr. in 1947 and left Electrolux in 1951 to raise her sons, Ralph and William Jr. She re-entered the workforce in the mid 1970s, working for Con Diesel, and later retired from General Reassurance in 1991. She enjoyed playing softball, bowling and dancing at Laddin’s Terrace in Stamford. She was a lifelong parishioner of Saint Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside, where she was a member of the Ladies’ Guild and volunteered her time at the annual church carnival. She never missed a high school class reunion and enjoyed outings with the AARP.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1982. She is survived by her sister, Ida Caponera of White Plains, and a sister-in-law, Mini Fuscaldo of Cos Cob; her sons, Ralph and his wife, JoAnn, of Bethel, and William Jr. and his wife, Anne, of West Haven; five grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Thursday, July 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Castiglione Funeral Home in Greenwich. A Mass will be celebrated at Saint Catherine of Siena Church, 4 Riverside Ave., Riverside, on Friday, July 8, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Greenwich.
