Burning Cushion Closes Elm St.

The suspicious package found on East Elm Street Thursday afternoon was nothing more than a seat cushion, police said. An officer noticed the package at 1 p.m. smoldering in the parking lot on East Elm St. near Restoration Hardware. The street was closed as police officers, firefighters and the Stamford bomb squad checked it out, said Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the Greenwich Police Department.

"It was determined the suspicious package was actually what appeared to be a seat cushion," said Gray. "The cushion had been smoldering on the asphalt when the wind picked up and it caught on fire.

No one was hurt and the bomb squad determined there was no threat. East Elm Street was soon reopened.
