Members of Troop 9 of the Boy Scouts in Greenwich dug and scraped their way through the woods behind the Garden Education Center of Greenwich to uncover a new trail, historic landmarks and earn badges.
"We are working toward our Citizen in Community badge, which is a requirement for an Eagle Scout," James Poewniak said. "We worked five hours on Saturday and three hours on Tuesday to finish the trail."
James, with Pierce Chapin, Peter Forsberg and Ben Langly, cleared the 100-yard trail that finishes a loop for walkers. Nancy Chapin, who facilitated the project, said the four boys uncovered an old bridge and Col. Montgomery's stone steps. Montgomery purchased the land in the 1920s, which was then known as Wild Acres.
Chapin said that partnering with the Boy Scouts has been a great example of private and public groups working together. The Greenwich Riding and Trails Association and the Conservation Commission were also involved. "We are very proud of the work we did," Peter Forsberg said. The boys said their hard work would benefit the community.
