A black bear was sited just after 3 p.m. Thursday near King Street and the Merritt Parkway. Calls were put in to Greenwich Police, Animal Control and the Department of Environmental Protection. According to the DEP website, black bears have become established in Connecticut and often end up in residential areas.
"It's the younger bears that are more commonly seen wandering around," said Stacy Remeor, an animal control officer. "They're just looking for a place to hangout and claim their territory. Once they realize they've gone to far, they go back."
The likelihood of a bear attacking a human is quite low and when given a chance to escape, bears tend to prefer more secluded areas, the DEP says. The bear has not been seen since Thursday and the DEP says it probably went back to its territory.
"The young ones are looking for a spot of their own," said Remeor. "But they grow up a little and meander back with the other guys again. They're kind of like teenagers."
