Come out and support the riders of the 8th annual Tri-State Trek to end ALS. Greenwich will play host to the finish line on Sunday a town police officer who has the disease is honored.
The 270-mile bike ride that kicks off Friday in Newton, Mass., will conclude at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park around 2:30 p.m.. Riders are raising funds to combat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gherigs disease, through the ALS Therapy Development Institute.
Each leg of the race will honor a person who is afflicted with the disease. Some riders plan to arrive early in Greenwich to ride several times up and down the steep, windy John Street several times to show their dedication to the cause. The riders will also honor Greenwich Police Sgt. Roger Petrone. A 16-year veteran with the Greenwich Police Department, Petrone was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and remains on active duty in Criminal Investigations.
Day one of the trek from Newton to the University of Connecticut in Storrs, honors David Virden Sr., an ALS patient who rode the 2007 trek with family and friends. Day two, which concludes in New Haven, honors Darryl Goss, another ALS patient who rode the event twice. Finally, day three honors ALS Warrior Poet, Jon Blazeman Blais.
A final victory ride down Greenwich Avenue will start at 2:00 PM to reach Roger Sherman Baldwin Park.
