3 Detectives Honored for Gun Arrests

Three narcotics detectives were honored this week for their efforts to arrest two suspects allegedly looking to sell handguns illegally in Greenwich.

Detectives Gary Hoffkins, Joseph Rondini and Richard Stook were all awarded Officer of the Month for July.

"Narcotics and illegal firearms go hand-in-hand, and we are fortunate whenever officers can take either from the street," Police Chief David Ridberg said in a statement. "The investigative team is commended for their diligence."

According to police, the detectives received a tip and began surveillance on a 17-year-old driver and his passenger, Daniela Peguero, 21 of 95 Liberty St., Stamford. They were spotted driving at 1371 E. Putnam Ave. and pulled over. During the stop, the teen told police he planned to sell a gun but had hidden it in nearby bushes. The gun, a .32-caliber semi automatic handgun, was found. The duo was arrested on charges of weapons in a motor vehicle, carrying a handgun without a permit, criminal attempt at the sale of a pistol and conspiracy to possess a pistol without a permit.
