200 Fish Die in Bruce Park Pond

Talk about a fish graveyard! At least 200 scaly creatures died in a tidal pond at Bruce Park in Greenwich over the weekend. They were found floating in a green-blue film along the shoreline of the pond Saturday and Sunday. Officials identified the species as Bunker and Gizzard Shad.

Town Conservation Assistant Joseph Cassone investigated Monday morning and concluded that the high-temperature and low-oxygen levels of the pond water caused the deaths.

"Fish kills are normal for this time of year," said Cassone. "They get chased up by predators, and these fish came into a patch of water with low oxygen.

Cassone said the Bunker and Gizzard Shad had migrated from Long Island Sound into the pond, which is about the half the size of a football field. Although 200 sounds like a large number, Cassone said it is relatively small. He said other fish kills have numbered in the thousands.
