Two New York men turned themselves in to Greenwich Police on Wednesday on warrants stemming from two separate incidents in which they allegedly scammed elderly drivers by making bogus repairs.
Alfie Steve Ufie, 22, of 13256 Crossboy Blvd., Queens, and David W. Laray, 19, of 10664 95th St., Ozone Park, were arrested by warrants issued Dec. 3. The warrants allege two incidents in which Ufie and Laray approached and stopped elderly drivers while they were in their cars. The elderly drivers would then be told their cars were in need of immediate repairs and would proceed to make phony repairs. The duo then allegedly would charge the elderly people for "fixing" the vehicle.
The Greenwich Police Department had been investigating four complaints since Oct. 11. However, Lt. Kraig Gray, department spokesman, said two of the complaints could not be fully substantiated. Ufie and Laray had been identified Nov. 17 after an incident with an elderly driver.
"To target elderly victims carries a more severe penalty in Connecticut," said Gray.
The two were arrested on three felony charges of second-degree larceny, second-degree conspiracy to commit larceny and second-degree criminal attempt at larceny. They were also charged in misdemeanors of breach of peace, no auto repair license, false statement for motor vehicle repair and failure to provide estimate for repair.
Ufie and Laray were held on $50,000 bonds and scheduled to appear in court Dec. 15.
