WW II Veteran Likes His Fish Fresh

Nothing is better than a freshly caught snapper for breakfast. At least Tom Varbero thinks so. The 90-year-old World War II veteran has been fishing at Indian Harbor River in Greenwich for more than 82 years. He said he tries to catch at least five snappers a day.

A small group of fishermen meets every morning at the harbor to reel in their morning catch. Steve Santacroce, who has continued his ritual for more than 20 years, said they catch mainly snappers, bunkers and blue fish. The rise of commercial netters in the area has caused a decline in the fish population, which is a major problem for local fishermen, he said.
