Work Your Legs At Gobbler Run

A Thanksgiving morning run could be the perfect thing to justify the jumbo helpings that will be eaten later that day. At least Bill Mongovan thinks so.

For the past 31 years, Mongovan has been organizing the six-mile Gateway Gobbler. He said it’s a small, laid-back race for people who don’t want to run on crowded roads. The race has been canceled only once in its three-decade history, and that was due to a snowstorm. Mongovan noted that people still went out and ran.

"We just enjoy doing it," he said. "It is a humble, nice Thanksgiving race with awards in various categories. In previous years, we used to give out turkeys for the grab bag. One year they were frozen and another year we had live turkeys. This year we are giving out pies."

Mongovan encourages walkers and runners, with or without four-legged friends, to come out and enjoy the holiday morning. The race begins at Greenwich Catholic Grammar School at 8 a.m. Participants need to be off the course by 10 a.m. For more information, call (203) 655-9937.
