Quitting a good corporate job may seem like an unwise career move, but that wasn't the case for Tori Santos, Stephanie Primm and Kim Jackson. They left unhappy day jobs for a budding floral business called The Flower Shop.
"This is a total life-changing, wonderful, dreams- really-can-come-true kind of a place," said co-owner Primm, who once had a career in marketing. "We have a sign saying, 'It's never too late to be what you might have been.' It has become our motto."
Santos and Jackson bought the store in 2007. It had always been a flower shop, and the previous owner would only sell to someone who intended to keep it that away. "Kim had always dreamed of having a flower shop," said Santos. "I was a graphic designer in the corporate world and doing well at something I didn't like very much, but I knew I wanted to leave and open a business."
Breaking free from their previous jobs has enabled the women to find their hidden passions. "Getting up in the morning and loving what you do was so foreign to me," said Santos. "Three years later, sometimes I cant wait to get to work. For me, this is just another extension of doing art." Primm described her enthusiasm as being in the zone and getting satisfaction from making other people happy.
The women take pride in providing creative pieces to their customers. Santos said that after a lot of trial and error figuring out where to buy their flowers, they realized that quality had to come first. "[The Flower Shop] is not you're typical cookie cutter florist," said Santos. "We focus on the beauty of the arrangement. Not what a picture looks like."
For the holidays, Santos said, they have been doing flower arrangements on small wooden sleds and antique-like vases with deep reds and greens. The Flower Shop is located at 1046 North St. For more information on their flowers, call (203) 661-3400.
