United Way Fundraiser is Ready to Roll

Race fans, hit the starting line: The United Way of Greenwich is gearing up for its annual VivaPop All-American Soap Box Derby on the Avenue.

At least 32 young drivers will race down Greenwich Avenue on Sunday, Sept. 12, in custom-built cars powered by nothing more than gravity. Local nonprofit organizations nominate drivers to participate, and local businesses sponsor the cars and the race.

"It is a great opportunity and team exercise for kids," said Tom Gabriel, director of development for the United Way of Greenwich. "They will get a slice of competitiveness and will be able to take part in something not many kids get to do."

After the race, visitors can head over to Fawcett Place for fun fall activities at Septemberfest. United Way partner agencies and volunteers will have a variety of information available along with games, balloons, and arts and crafts. The event is the launch of the communitywide 2010-11 fundraising campaign. The derby begins at 8 a.m., and the fun continues through 1 p.m. Sunday.
