The Transportation Association of Greenwich (TAG) has a new development director and big plans to expand services. Van Parker came into TAG less than a month ago to raise awareness of services and find new funding for more vehicles.
"I've lived in Greenwich almost 30 years and when I made the decision to help TAG out, a lot of my close friends called me up and asked, 'What's TAG?' It told me that I made the right decision," Parker said.
"If the town didn't have TAG, a lot of people and families would be struggling. It's a good mission, it has a functional purpose that is not glamorous, but it's great," said Parker.
Based in Riverside, TAG is a private, nonprofit transportation service for the elderly, disabled and for children. Founded in 1984 through United Way, TAG serves residents traveling within and just outside Greenwich get to their destinations, be it the Senior Center or doctor's appointments for the elderly or the Boys and Girls Club and YMCA/YWCA for kids.
TAG unites five separate transportation systems. Depending on needs, riders can use Easy Access, Dial-A-Ride, Greenwich Commuter Shuttles, Greenwich Senior Center Shuttles or the Red Cross Motor Service through TAG.
Parker said he plans to generate capital for replacement of vans and operating funds from donations and underwriting as well as the creation of other long term programs.
"[The goal of Parker's new position} is to let those in need as well as the sons and daughters of disabled elderly know that we're here and let them know that we need their support," said James G. Boutelle, executive director of TAG.
