Greenwich will take a page out of the past as the Putnam Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presents a living tableau of the pre-Revolutionary period at an event called "Knapp's Tavern by Candlelight."
This free event will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Putnam Cottage, located at 234 E. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich.
The cottage, opened as a tavern in 1734 by the Knapp family, will be decorated for Christmas in the minimalist fashion of the day with candles, simple greens and berries, pine and fir. The DAR researched food that would have been served in the winter of 1734 and will prepare roast chickens, loaves of country bread, wassail, fruitcake and gingerbread topped with mounds of syllabub.
Twenty costumed members of the Fifth Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Line and a member of the Matthew Mead Branch of the Sons of the American Revolution will sing holiday songs. They plan to pitch an encampment tent outside and "stand sentry" to welcome the public. Musicians for the event include flutist Mary Fike, a member of the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra, as well as Linda Stevens on harp and a regimental fife player.
