Joe Criscuolo of Pizza Post and Mike Rocco of Planet Pizza beg to differ on who has the best slice. Fresh dough, steaming tomato sauce and gooey mozzarella cheese: Finding the perfect slice of pizza is a debate that every family faces. Where can you find the best pizza in Greenwich?
"What sets us apart? We make everything ourselves, everything is done on premises. The dough and the sauce are made every single day," said Rocco, co-owner with brothers Joe and Frank of Planet Pizza at 28 Railroad Ave. ''Weekends and summers in our family pizza shop in the Bronx were the most influential times of our lives.''
Family also runs deep at Pizza Post. "My father was the first to bring the margarita pizza to Greenwich," said Criscuolo, co-owner with brother Matt of Pizza Post at 522 E. Putnam Ave. "We have been around for over 40 years. We take pride in what we do and make everything from scratch and what we love."
Jill Capalbo says the Post has always been the best pizza joint around. "My family has been in town a hundred years," she said. "Pizza places come and go, and Pizza Post, a family-owned business, is still here. You walk in, they know your name, your family and all your cousins. I remember when Pizza Post first opened with its thin crust pie. It's been consistently good all these years. It's the best-tasting, best-handling thin crust pie around."
So what's the most popular slice at Planet Pizza? Grandma's Pizza, made with fresh mozzarella, fresh plum tomatoes and basil. "It's called Grandma's Pizza because it really has a homemade taste," said Rocco. "We bring in fresh ingredients daily, and the recipes have been handed down for generations."
But Barbara Domaszewski, a former Greenwich resident, casts her ballot elsewhere. "Bruce Park Grill is still serving the best pizza anywhere," she said. "I can so remember that mouth-watering taste and haven't experienced it anywhere else."
As for Pizza Post, Criscuolo said everything is made fresh and from the best ingredients. "The key is to keep things simple and consistent. We stick to tradition with our pizza; even our ovens are 40 years old. We use the original recipe and don't deviate from it."
