Take a Fall Walk to Support Children's Programs

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — There is still time to join the eighth annual “For the Children” Walk-a-thon and Fall Festival this Sunday to raise money for the John A. Coleman School and Children’s Rehabilitation Center. The festivities kick off at noon at Saxon Woods Park in White Plains. Last year, more than 150 supporters raised $45,000.

Kristin McArthur, associate director of development, said, “We’re very excited because we are going to be honoring our Friends of the White Plains Fire Department for their longstanding efforts to improve the lives of our children and our facility.” The walkathon was created to offer the whole family a fun fall day that includes music, entertainment and refreshments.

The John A. Coleman School has campuses in White Plains and Manhattan. It provides special education programs and services from birth to age 21. In White Plains, Coleman provides home-, community- and center-based preschool special education. It also provides services to children from more than 30 school districts in Westchester and Putnam counties as well as the Bronx and Manhattan.

The Manhattan campus serves the residents of the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center, a 13-bed skilled nursing facility for medically fragile children. Last year, the Coleman School helped more than 1,400 children and their families.

The Children’s Rehabilitation Center Inc., also located in White Plains, is an outpatient pediatric diagnostic and treatment center providing services to 3,200 children with developmental disabilities each year. It cares for children ages birth to 21 who reside in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess and Orange counties as well as the Bronx. Patients receive medical and rehabilitative services, especially those for children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, chromosomal syndromes, orthopedic impairments and other complex medical diagnoses.
