GREENWICH, Conn. Time is running out to submit book suggestions for the Greenwich Library 2012 Greenwich Reads Together campaign, and the library wants your input.
The programs goal is to engage the community in exploring a single book. This month, residents can submit suggestions at the Greenwich Reads Together Website. Suggestion boxes will also be located at all library branches and partner locations. Discussions, programs and lectures based on the selected book are scheduled for the two weeks from April 15-29.
Last spring, the program focused on The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and nearly 20 community organizations participated, including the Greenwich Alliance for Education, Nathaniel Witherell, Greenwich Pen Women and Neighbor to Neighbor. More than 2,000 Greenwich residents participated in events, including two sold-out sessions with author Zusak, lectures, concerts and craft sessions for kids.
During November, the Book Selection Committee, composed of Greenwich Library staff from across several departments, will select a book expected to have broad appeal. They will announce their decision later in the month. There will be plenty of hard and e-copies available through the libraries, and the announcement also coincides with holiday gift buying.
A book for the reading campaign should be of high literary quality, reflective of universal issues and capable of generating thought-provoking discussions. A book by a living author is preferred, though not required. It must also be in print and available in large quantities and multiple formats, including paperback, e-book, audiobook and large print.
BNY Mellon Wealth Management is giving a $7,000 grant for the programs implementation. It will be used to purchase books for library circulation and pay for the programs brochures, posters, and other print materials, the library announced Wednesday.
The Steering Committee includes the Greenwich Library, Greenwich Arts Council, Greenwich Historical Society, Greenwich Alliance for Education, Greenwich Pen Women, Greenwich Public Schools and Friends of Greenwich Library.
