Stephen Porretto, 87, New Rochelle WWII Veteran

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Stephen Porretto of New Rochelle died May 22 at Sound Shore Medical Center. He was 87.

The son of Dominick and Elizabeth Fortuno Porretto, he was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Stefanaconi, Italy. Porretto attended Mamaroneck High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. From 1944-46, he fought battles in central Europe, Normandy, northern France andthe  Rhineland, attaining the rank of sergeant in the 106th Cavalry. 

Porretto married Josephine Strazza June 24, 1951, at St. Joseph's Church in New Rochelle. He worked for Concord Glazing Products for more than 30 years. Porretto also worked at Sound Shore Medical Center for five years.

He was a member of North Italy Society for many years. He also was a member of the Calatron Club and a social member of Court Sons of Italy. 

Porretto is survived by two sons, Dominick (Valerie) Porretto, of Tucson, Ariz., and Salvatore (Mary) Porretto, of New Rochelle; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers, Frank Porretto, of Larchmont, and Salvatore Porretto, of Mamaroneck; a sister, Mary Levanti, of East Lyme, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews

He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine, Nov. 4, 2007; and three brothers, Carmine, Dominick and Nicholas Porretto. 

Calling hours are from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at N. Cancro Funeral Home in New Rochelle. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye.
