Animal adoptions skyrocket in springtime, and at Adopt-A-Dog Greenwich, 10 new furry faces rescued from a puppy mill are available. Unfortunately, now that the snow has melted, the shelter is seeing the damages from winter, says President Allyson Halm.
Were raised enough money so far to replace a few of the doors that rotted or were knocked down. But there are still other areas that need to get back into shape, said Halm. A pile of brush has been gathered, and fence pieces were lying on the ground Thursday. Were just now seeing how much damage was done, she said, adding that Adopt-A-Dog hopes a stonemason may donate services to repair the front walkway.
Both the shelter and the 10 dogs rescued from a Midwest puppy mill are in need of tender loving care. The dogs were in mostly reasonable condition, considering, said Halm, though one dog, Louie, was in bad shape. He has sores, lumps, tumors and the top of his head is balding. Were slowly nurturing him back to health, because when he first came here he couldnt even walk.
On March 29, Adopt-A-Dog hosted a homecoming for 160 dogs and puppies rescued from Midwest puppy mills. Best Friends Animal Society, based in Utah, transported the animals, which were then placed in 14 tristate area shelters. Adopt-A-Dog received 10 dogs that are now ready for adoption. It was Adopt-A-Dogs fourth time working with Best Friends and second time hosting a homecoming, which took place in the lot behind the shelter in Armonk, N.Y.
These dogs arent cookie-cutter, said Halm. Theyre not housebroken, and they have never been around children, so they need someone who really can take the time to train them and who understand the emotional and social needs of dogs who have been kept in difficult environments for so long.
