Share the Road on Mother's Day in Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. – The following is an article submitted by Greenwich Safe Cycling about a the 10th Annual Ride for Greenwich, in honor of Mother’s Day.

May is National Bike Month, proclaimed by the League of American Bicyclists as it marks the beginning of the cycling season in the majority of states. Multiuse trails and other separated facilities are bustling with bikes sharing the space with walkers, joggers and other nonmotorized users, both for recreation and for commuting and other practical trips.

Where there are no such facilities, the numbers of bikes sharing the road with motor vehicles has been climbing in recent years — not coincidentally along with the price of gasoline. This is true of Fairfield County, and especially in Greenwich, where we have only just begun to consider multiuse trails, making it crucial that motorists and cyclists learn to share the road safely and with confidence.

Greenwich Safe Cycling is celebrating Mother's Day and National Bike Month with the 10th Annual Ride for Greenwich on May 13, from 8:30 to 10:30 at Old Greenwich Riverside Community Center. All levels welcome. For the new cyclist, we offer a 1.5-mile ride. For the more experienced, there is a 7-mile route that takes riders around Tod's Point. There are kid's games and prizes, including a bike raffle, bike specialists and free T-shirts for the first 100 kids under the age of 12.

Applications are available at Upper Crust Bagel, Dave's Cycle, Greenwich Bicycle, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, River Cycle, all Aux Delices locations, and online at www.greenwichsafecycling.org. Helmets are required, and will be provided by Silver Shield for those in need.
