School Festival Offers a Taste of Fall

Pony rides and apple crisp are two of the many things that will set the theme at the North Greenwich Nursery School's 28th Annual Apple Festival this weekend.

"There will be a bouncy castle, arts and crafts, pumpkin decorating and doughnuts on a string," said Mary Hannigan, director of the nursery.

The Apple Festival started in 1982 with a bunch of games for children outside, while members of the North Greenwich Congregational Church made apple pies and apple crisp.

"Through the years, it has developed to a much bigger thing with vendors and more activities," said Hannigan. "Most people know it from its hot apple crisp with ice cream."

The event is scheduled for Saturday on the nursery grounds, 606 Riversville Road. Admission is free, and it is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available. A silent auction will feature restaurant gift cards, gym memberships and sports memorabilia. Proceeds will be split between the nursery school and the church.
