The New York City skyline, crisp fall air and a feel-good attitude are just a few of the things joggers at Tod's Point will experience Sunday at the Beachfront Bushwhack 5-mile cross-country run. But this weekend's jog won't just be for personal satisfaction. Kids will be able to run "Max's Mile" in memory of Max Scotti, who died of brain cancer in 2009 at the age of 7.
"After Max passed away from an inoperable rare form of brain cancer in April 2009, Mickey Yardis [owner of Threads and Treads] offered to dedicate the kids mile run to Max," said Margery Scotti, Max's mother. "We see many of Max's classmates and friends at the run and feel so blessed to have had Max in our life."
His mother noted that Max loved to go to races and squeeze into a good spot right in front, next to his sisters and brother. "He always felt like a winner no matter where he finished," she said. "That is what I'd like all the kids at Max's Mile to take home with them. A sense of individual accomplishment and a medal to hang in their room. Max knew he would never finish the race anywhere close to his siblings, but that never mattered. He was just happy to finish."
The race will take runners on scenic paths and secret trails through Tod's Point. But be prepared for some logs and hay bales to jump over. It will begin behind the South concession stand at 9:30 a.m. Pre-entry is $15 and can be faxed to (203) 661-0917. Same-day entry is $20.
