Flowers and greenery at train stations may be expected in a commuter town such as Greenwich. But its the members of the community who use elbow grease to get the job done.
Residents will put their shovels to the dirt Saturday and plant flowers at the Riverside train station for a beautification day sponsored by the Riverside Garden Club, Riverside Association and Greenwich Green and Clean.
Families, Girl Scouts, kids from Greenwich High School, along with the club members, all come out. We get a few commuters and then we get people passing by who say were doing a great job, said Jessica Fass, chair of civic and conservation for the Riverside Garden Club. Theyre the ones who really get to enjoy it.
The club cleaned up the area last month, weeding and inspecting damage from the winters brutal storms. Surprisingly, we didnt do too badly this year. We were lucky, said Fass, adding the garden club will work weekly to maintain the flowers and shrubbery throughout the summer.
I love to garden on my own property, and trade ideas and learn from other people in the club, said Fass. The club provides education, and theres great camaraderie.
The town hands out mulch, but the Garden Club picks out the flowers. Were going to plant perennials, annuals, marigolds and pink and blue impatiens, said Fass. The club started a butterfly garden last year, and Fass said it would be in bloom soon.
Residents who want to participate must bring their own gardening tools, including gloves and shovels, and meet at the Station House side from 10 a.m. to noon, with a rain date of May 21. For information, call Jessica Fass at 203-637-2233.
