Sitting in a red plastic sled on top of a snowy hill during Fridays storm, Enda McGovern was apprehensive to say the least. Im looking down and Im honestly terrified, he said sitting with his son, Oliver. Hes done this before, but I have never been sledding here, only back in Ireland and I cant remember what its like.
After bad weather shut schools early Friday, the hills beside the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center were full of kids and their parents looking for a quick thrill in the storm plastic sleds and inflatable tubes.
Surveying the hill for possible bumps that could send McGovern and Oliver careening off paths, the pair held on tight and dad cried out, Oliver, I love you! before descending down. Spinning out into the snow at the bottom of the hill, McGovern jokingly yelled, Were alive! Were alive!
It was a successful first run.
It was a day of sledding firsts for another rider, John Andrew, a 1-year old who was there with his mother, Catherine Landers. John was stuffed into his snowsuit and didnt appear quite sure what to expect. The bigger hill occupied by older kids looked too steep, said Landers, so she opted for a less scary ride for Johns first time. Ive always loved the snow, and I hope to inspire him to feel the same way, she said.
Though John clutched his mother, teary-eyed at the top of the smaller hill next to the civic center, his fear soon turned to glee. By the end of the ride, he was standing and smiling as the two trudged through the snow to ride again, and again.
