GREENWICH, Conn. At this years Puttin On the Dog festival scheduled for Sept. 25 and sponsored by Adopt-A-Dog Greenwich, the shelter is hoping to find homes for dogs that have been in need of adoption for too long.
Were trying to encourage people to think outside the box and really do a true rescue, said Allyson Halm, executive director for Adopt-A-Dog. Were hoping to bring some of the dogs that we have that are maybe not as likely to be adopted, and were hoping people will reach out and think about looking at a dog in need, versus the cute little fluffy puppy.
The older dogs include Maggie, a Jack Russell Terrier that is eight-and-a-half-years-old and has skin conditions. Other dogs, such as Tyke and Noelle, have been with the adoption center for more than four years. Halm said although the dogs have some issues, its important for them to find good homes. Puttin On the Dog is the perfect place to showcase these animals.
Its such an exciting event. Its our largest fundraiser and the largest outdoor dog event from here to Boston, said Halm. Every year something new happens.
Each year, more than 5,000 people attend the family- and pet-oriented festival. The for-fun dog show includes 17 categories, such as Biggest Lap Dog, K-9 Krooners, Clever K-9 Tricks, Doggie Musical Chairs and Mirror Mirror for contestants that look like their owners. Other offerings throughout the day are police demonstrations, celebrity judges, clowns, food, a silent auction, grab bags and vendors. It truly is a family day from the dog right on up, said Halm. Everyone can come, and theres something for everyone.
Puttin On the Dog takes place Sunday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park in Greenwich. All-day admission is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors and children over 5; and free for all children 4 and under.
This year, Adopt-A-Dog needs funds more than ever, after downed trees from Hurricane Irene damaged fences and pens. We had approximately 17 trees either come down completely or are now leaning on other trees, said Halm. The good news is no buildings, staff, or animals were injured that day and night. It was an extensive amount of damage. About 12 trees have already been removed thanks to Reckson S.L. Green Realty Corp., but there is still damage and work to be done at the adoption center.
