Diane De Main is a familiar face at the Greenwich Library and has garnered quite the following. De Main, a registered nurse at Greenwich Hospital, participates in a program that offers free health education and blood pressure screenings for the community at various places around town. De Main said people often come talk to her after a doctor advises a new medication or to see if their current blood pressure medication is working. "Sometimes I'll see people every week or once a month."
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for coronary disease, heart attack, kidney disease and other major illnesses. Symptoms do not occur until after serious damage has already been done to an organ. The program helps community members to keep track of their health and offers a relaxed, no-invasive atmosphere.
"A lot of people feel more comfortable talking to nurses," said De Main. "We're here to educate but, also to counsel and give advice." Blood pressure screenings are offered every Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Greenwich Library.
